About this Project

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded an $8.7 million contract to Social & Scientific Systems, Inc. (SSS), teaming with Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) and Proteomics Information Resource (PIR), Georgetown University Medical Center, to form the NIAID Resource Center for Biodefense Proteomic Research.

This contract supports NIAID's goal to improve defense against bioterrorism and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Under this contract, the Admin Center provides support to seven NIAID-funded Proteomics Research Centers by developing and maintaining a publicly accessible Web site that serves as a portal to share data and resources between the PRCs and the scientific community. The Admin Center has also established a Scientific Working Group (SWG) composed of scientists with expertise in a broad range of areas including proteomics, bioinformatics, and infectious diseases. The Proteomic Research Centers and Admin Center will solicit advice from the SWG on all aspects of the operations and future directions of the PRC sites, including policies and practices for data, reagent, and technology sharing among the sites and with the broader research community. The Admin Center will continue to promote awareness throughout the scientific community of the Proteomics Research Centers, the resources available through the program's Web site, and the availability of proteomic data and resources.
