About The Scientific Working Group (SWG)

Background

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health has recently established research and development contracts with seven centers to conduct Biodefense proteomics research to assist NIAID in discovering targets for candidates for the next generation of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics. The Biodefense Proteomic Research Centers (PRCs) use existing proteomics technologies, augment existing technologies, create novel proteomics approaches, characterize the proteome and identify potential protein targets, and will perform early stage validation of targets. The PRCs focus on selected NIAID Category A-C priority pathogens and other microorganisms responsible for emerging and/or re-emerging diseases. More information about NIAID's program.

An additional and critically important contract has also been awarded by NIAID to manage the administrative needs for the research centers throughout the life of their five-year contracts. The Administrative Resource for Biodefense Proteomics Research Centers has several goals, the major one of which is to make the targets generated by the PRCs available in a timely and user-friendly fashion for the entire scientific community. In order to achieve this goal, the formation of a Scientific Working Group to provide advice to the entire program of PRCs and Administrative Resource Center is planned.

About the Scientific Working Group

Recently, the Administrative Resource Center has invited members of the scientific community to play a role in guiding this endeavor as members of the Scientific Working Group (SWG). This membership will last throughout the life of the five year contracts to provide advice to the PRC's and Administrative Resource Center. The SWG will be composed of scientists with expertise in a broad range of areas including proteomics, bioinformatics as well as infectious diseases. The Proteomic Research Centers and Administrative Resource Center will solicit advice from the SWG on all aspects of the operations and future directions of the PRC sites; including policies and practices for data, reagent, and technology sharing among the sites and with the broader research community.
