Description
A poxvirus (species Vaccinia virus of the genus Orthopoxvirus) that differs from, but is closely related to, the viruses causing smallpox and cowpox and that includes a strain of uncertain natural origin used in making vaccines against smallpox. The virions are enveloped, pleomorphic or brick-shaped. They have an external coat containing lipid and tubular or globular protein structures enclosing one or two lateral bodies and a core, which contains the genome.
Significance in Biodefense Proteomics
No known bioterrorism applications. However, due to recent concerns about smallpox resurfacing as a possible agent for bioterrorism, scientists have renewed their interests in studying Vaccinia virus.
