Pollen is a powder containing “microgametophytes” of plant seeds. Plants reproduce with pollen. It is transmitted from plant to plant with the wind, or with insects such as bee’s which fly on flowers. Someone people are allergic to pollen, just like some people are allergic to carrotes. There is something in the body which does not accept the substance and then starts allergic reactions. The most commun reactions for pollen allergy are blood shot eyes and itchiness of the eyes, sneezing and very runny nose, migraines, irritations and asthma. The asthma can be very serious and in some cases it can inflame the throat and prevent from breathing. Pollen allergy is communly called Hay fever.
This allergy can be really annoying for those who suffer from it. Because it always occures in spring when the plants and trees blossom. Spring is the exam periode in university and many other schools. It is a periode where you need to be able to concentrate. Having migraines does not help at all. Also having to blow your nose and having irritated eyes can be distracting.
There exists several medications for this allergy, but they are not always effectiv and you need to buy them every year. There is a treatment which is a disensibilisation process, the objectiv is to get the body to finally accept pollen and stop the allergy. This treatment consitst on monthly pollen injections for over several years. This slowly gets the body used to the substance. Because there are many different pollens, the first step is to find out which one is causing the allergy. The doctors then prick you with needles with every sort of pollen on and see to which one you react. Then they know which one is needed for the treatment. Once the injection has been done the doctors needs to check that no sever allergic reaction occur, therefore the patient has to wait a while before he can leave.
